Finally got around to watching His Dark Materials.
I watched the movie a few years ago, and whilemit was OK, it was ultimately unsatisfactory. Like all movies attempting to condense big books into one show, it left too much out, even though it was only covering the first book of the trilogy. It wasn't dark enough, either.
The series (2022, BBC via HBO) is excellent. The Beeb really knows how to produce excellence when they really try. Watched the first 6 episodes last night.
Dafne Keen as Lyra Belacqua shows just the right amount of sass and emotion for the character.
Ruth Wilson as Marisa Coulter is bloody perfect! Charming, nasty, and unhinged in just the right proportions.
Anne-Marie Duff as Maggie "Ma" Costa is perfectly cast.
Lin-Manuel Miranda as Lee Scoresby is a good choice, but I prefer Sam Elliot (just because I love Sam's style).
