נמר שלג תבלין דלעת 🍂For me, Judaism has this kind of calming warmth to it. Like a warm bed after a long tiring day. It’s feeling within myself that I’ve never felt before. One I struggle to articulate in any meaningful way.This came up for me during the Passover Seder I attended. Some claimed they felt a kind of “divine presence” with us at the table, a poetic notion I can’t honestly get behind. Others were taking the occasion very seriously, following along and remaining silent throughout most of the service. And still others, like the two Egyptian Jews at my table, ate out of turn and were so giddy with wine they lost their place in the Haggadah. If the neighbouring tables were the try-hards, we were the laid back enjoyers of the occasion.I, on the other paw, found myself in a more unique place. In a way I took it upon myself to lead my table’s Seder, passing out food before others took to it themselves. Enjoying the moment and understanding the meaning behind each step along this journey. It seemed like I was one of the most knowledgeable ones there. They turned to me for clarification on this and that. I haven’t even finished classes.This “warmth” seems almost oxymoronic given the gravity of some of the stuff discussed in the Torah. Perhaps it’s the community, whatever that means these days. Perhaps it’s the rituals I try to maintain, grounding me in the present moment and to put intention behind the things I do. Perhaps it’s the relentless strive toward creating a better tomorrow despite everything the world throws at us. Perhaps it’s the rich history and cultural tapestry unravelling before me like that Sephardi scroll we unravelled in synagogue. An acknowledgement of and connection to something larger than myself.It’s hard for me to articulate this feeling within me.
