starbase80.wtf is one of the many independent Mastodon servers you can use to participate in the fediverse.
Just because we believe in Starfleet's ideals and values doesn't mean we're serious and professional. There's a reason we ended up at Starbase 80.

Martin Rundkvist<p>I love how <a href="https://archaeo.social/tags/Linux" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Linux</span></a>, unlike <a href="https://archaeo.social/tags/Windows" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Windows</span></a>, never bogs my computer down. Neither in the sense that an old Windows installation gets all grotty and slow with accumulated registry gunk, nor in the sense that Windows eventually forces you to upgrade to a version that is too computing-heavy in itself for a 5-y-o machine.</p><p><a href="https://archaeo.social/tags/buynothing" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>buynothing</span></a> <a href="https://archaeo.social/tags/repair" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>repair</span></a></p>

Erik L. Midtsveen 🏴🏳️‍🌈<p>Well electric cars, hell, cars in general these days come with proprietary software that totally screws over the buyer's ability to fix their own damn car. It's bullshit, plain and simple.</p><p>Right to repair isn't just some fancy slogan, it's a fucking right. Period. I'm all in on open source software and the freedom to dig into the code, learn from it, and yeah, fix it if I need to. SunnJax 🌞🏳️‍🌈 :Fire_Pride:<p>I’m really proud of myself this morning. I just installed a “new” used door at my home. Thanks to my local recycling center and great instructions from PBS’s This Old House, it only cost me $15 and took less than 2 hours to complete the task. 🚪🛠️</p><p>When people want to defund things like recycling centers, libraries, or public television, I don’t think they understand the harm they’re doing. These invaluable resources help all of us learn, make, create, repair, do, and more. It’s stupid when conservatives scream about the tiny investments we make in public resources like these given their contributions to lifelong learning and overall benefits to society.</p><p><a href="https://tech.lgbt/tags/repair" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>repair</span></a> <a href="https://tech.lgbt/tags/ThisOldHouse" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>ThisOldHouse</span></a></p>

ProPublica<p>Idaho Passed $2 Billion in Funding for School Building Repairs. It’s Not Nearly Enough.<br>—</p><p>A new cost estimate and early reports from districts receiving state funds show that small districts are still struggling to meet their most dire needs, forcing them to turn to voters to approve additional funds.</p><p><a href="https://www.propublica.org/article/idaho-schools-struggle-to-repair-buildings-despite-state-funding?utm_source=mastodon&amp;utm_medium=social&amp;utm_campaign=mastodon-post" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" translate="no" target="_blank"><span class="invisible">https://www.</span><span class="ellipsis">propublica.org/article/idaho-s</span><span class="invisible">chools-struggle-to-repair-buildings-despite-state-funding?utm_source=mastodon&amp;utm_medium=social&amp;utm_campaign=mastodon-post</span></a></p><p><a href="https://newsie.social/tags/News" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>News</span></a> <a href="https://newsie.social/tags/Idaho" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Idaho</span></a> <a href="https://newsie.social/tags/School" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>School</span></a> <a href="https://newsie.social/tags/Repair" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Repair</span></a> <a href="https://newsie.social/tags/Funding" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Funding</span></a> <a href="https://newsie.social/tags/Education" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Education</span></a></p>
Nazo<p>I guess a handful of people on Mastodon might understand that there is a satisfaction to be found in taking old, abused tools and cleaning and sharpening them until they are actually useful again. I didn't really have the right stuff to make it as sharp as I'd like, but it is able to split and chip wood sufficiently (mostly just needed for an emergency stove I hope I'll never have to use anyway.)</p><p>I can't emphasize enough how big of a change it was really. This thing was literally <em>brown</em>. There wasn't a single millimeter of non-rusted metal. Even a bit of the coating has rust... The person who originally had it literally left it outside for year, getting rained on...</p><p>I love that there is probably someone somewhere on Mastodon who might like this.</p><p><a href="https://urusai.social/tags/Tools" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Tools</span></a> <a href="https://urusai.social/tags/Repair" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Repair</span></a> <a href="https://urusai.social/tags/Restoration" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Restoration</span></a></p>
mav :happy_blob:<p>I'm just kind of putting this out into the world </p><p>If you have anyone you know with phones that are broken but still functional - I'm thinking in particular of bad batteries, but also cracked displays, maybe even bad charging ports, as long as the phone still works, I would like to get a hold of some phones the otherwise people would throw away. </p><p>I was thinking that one of the things I might be able to do that would be useful would be to learn how to fix those devices because I never really did.</p><p>I have a feeling that with tariffs and shortages and outright attacks on the poor being the norm now that having people around who can do phone or tablet surgery and keep broken or aged devices functional may be a useful skill to acquire. </p><p><a href="https://hackers.town/tags/diy" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>diy</span></a> <a href="https://hackers.town/tags/repair" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>repair</span></a> <a href="https://hackers.town/tags/phone" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>phone</span></a> <a href="https://hackers.town/tags/community" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>community</span></a></p>
