The morning after the big winds from the ex-Tropical Cyclone Alfred, our regular King Parrots turned up for a rest and some seed in the relatively dry veranda.
They definitely looked a bit worse for wear, but they got a good feed and some shelter for a while.

An extremely wet and windswept King Parrot perched on the back of a chair. All his feathers look soaked and stick down or out to him at angles. He's nominally red on the head and body, but the white down can be seen underneath. His dark green wings are even darker on account of being so wet.

His mate, the female, is out of focus on the table eating seed.

Muscleman tree ant (Podomyrma gratiosa), so called because the large femur makes her looks like she lifts!

Lace Monitor in the backyard this afternoon after I put an egg on the offering rock this morning. (note the lack of egg in these photos).

(egg wasn't entirely up to human consumption, as it floated when doing the float test).

Low clouds this morning in the mountains, bit that didn't stop a collection of birds turning up as soon as I stepped on the veranda.

They wanted food, but I don't have any.

Also, look how wide a kookaburra can open its beak!

The top of the ridge across the little valley from this house, shrouded in a thin mist from the low clouds. There is a bunya pine sticking up in to the mist.

More #birds from today's wanderings.

One of a pair of juvenile #AustralianMagpie that were playing on the lawn this morning.

A #GreyFantail stopping momentarily on a branch in the sun.

A #RufousFantail who managed to sit on this branch for almost 30 secs.

And a female #AustralianKingParrot blending in, in a Bunya Pine.

A juvenile Australian Magpie. Unlike the adults, the juveniles are grey & white instead of black & white. This one is on some lawn, head cocked at an angle listening.

A Grey Fantail highlighted in the sun against a dark background. It is, as its name suggests, grey, but with a white brow and throat. Its tail is not currently fanned, but it does fan it frequently.

A Rufous Fantail perched on a vine. It is brown, rufous and black (on the end of the tail). Its tail is not fully fanned in this shot.

A mostly green parrot (has a red rump) perched in a Bunya Pine, the foliage of which is also green. From a distance, this parrot would be hard to spot.

It's mostly overcast today, so the Red-necked Wallabies are out grazing during the day.

The first one was just across the road from where we are staying, the other three further down the road.

A wallaby on all fours looks up from eating as it notices the photographer.
It is looking directly at the camera, ears up and alert.
The background is a view down to the plains far below, and a nearer bushy tree (out of focus)

Stepping out of the eastern wing of Marketown in Newcastle West, I heard some screeching. A few dozen little corellas were sitting in the branches of this big, branchy fig tree next to the storm water channel.

White parrots are sitting on branches in the shade inside a large, branchy tree with small dark-green leaves. The blue sky can be seen through the leaves. Some of the birds appear to be sleeping.

We did the Koondaii Loop track this morning and encountered a few birds along the way. Here are four of them.

A Grey Goshawk, checking us out.
A Brown Cuckoo-Dove.
A Rufous Fantail.
And a Bassian Thrush.

A Grey Goshawk perched on a branch, body facing left, head turned slightly to get a better look at us. The back half of the bird is obscured by foliage.

It has a Light grey head and underside, dark grey wings, orange legs and feet and nose, with black beak. Penetrating black eyes.

A Brown Cuckoo-Dove perched in a tree. It was in deep shade, trying to be unnoticed. It is completely shades of brown with the its cap being a slightly more reddish brown and the wings being darker brown.
It has a cream stripe below the eye.

A Rufous Fantail perched on a branch. It is facing the camera, with its tail partially fanned. Its head is turned to the left.

This small bird has a large fanned tail, that is rufous at the base changing to black and finally white tips.

The res of the bird is mostly brownish on the back, with a rufous face, white neck, and striated white and brown chest.

This Bassian Thrush was keeping its distance and quite tricky to get any shot of.

It is speckled brown and white, with more brown towards the tail. It's perched on a branch in the undergrowth, and is not as sharply defined due to intervening foliage.

While heading to the office from the carpark this morning, I wandered along the path over Conifer Knoll. There were a lot of Little Corellas feeding, and in a patch of sun, this Bush Stone-Curlew chick.

Standing about 5 inches tall, at a distance it just looked like a miniature adult bird. It was only as I got closer that the fluffy down became apparent.
