…It was…unclear if #Starlink communications were #encrypted. At a minimum, the system allows for a network separate from existing WH servers that people on the grounds are able to use, keeping that data separate.

“It’s super rare” to install Starlink or another #internet provider as a replacement for existing govt #infrastructure that has been vetted & secured, said Jake Williams, a VP for R&D at Hunter Strategy, a #cybersecurity consultancy. “I can’t think of a time that I have heard of that.”

Social Security Employees Warn of Damage From #DOGE

Current & former employees, both #Republican & #Democratic, are raising alarms about the damage cost-cutting efforts could do to the agency’s ability to serve the public.

#ADHDMoment - I am rewinding film and suddenly a car honks in the distance. I let go of the rewind crank lever, look around what is happening, find out that nothing is going on, so I return to the crank and alas - zero resistance, the film must be back in the cartrige! I open the film door and gets greeted by half wound film...

$42.5 Billion Broadband Grant Program Being Rewritten To Benefit Elon Musk
techdirt.com/2025/03/12/42-5-b

"there are $42.5 billion in broadband #grants... courtesy of the 2021 #infrastructure bill. The #GOP voted against the bill, but have repeatedly... taken credit for its looming #benefits among our broadly misinformed electorate. And, as we predicted, they’re now redrafting key components of the program to the direct benefit of #ElonMusk"

The only possible explanation for these actions is that President Fragile Ego Tiny Hands is creating a #dictatorship in which he can act freely to make this country a #Russian vassal state

Update. "Safeguarding Research & Culture — Distributing Cultural Memory"
safeguarding-research.discours

"The destruction of knowledge and cultural heritage has happened, and therefore it can happen again. We are in the middle of that happening, whether it is caused by human action or natural causes…Safeguarding Research & Culture (#SRC) is creating an alternative #infrastructure for archiving and disseminating of cultural heritage and scientific knowledge…Together, we can ensure that our cultural, intellectual and scientific heritage exists in multiple copies, in multiple places, and that no single entity or group of entities can make it all disappear. Our archive is built according to the principles of #FAIR and #CARE, based on open technologies and standards, and resilient against loss via meaningfully distributed storage…Everyone, from individuals to institutions, can participate by accessing, contributing, and supporting these archival infrastructures."

The events of the past weeks have again upped the urgency of moving away from the US tech cloud. After forever Google and 18 years GitHub this is hard for me.

I am lucky that @distribits gave me the enthusiasm and the tools to make this happen for me and the #infrastructure of the #research group I am heading.

I really like thinking about the ecosystems in #space , especially in the #solarpunk context of being aware of our surroundings, microbiomes etc.

Just please don't make it about the aesthetics only, I don't want to see a hundred illustrations / stories about potted plants floating on the ISS. I want more stories like the Expanse's Ganymede Station's infrastructure.

@RickiTarr

This comment really resonates with me: "so many of them [the people recently fired] took these lower paying jobs, because they wanted to do work they felt actually helped people. You don't often think of government work and passion as things that go together, but there really are people out there that care."

People as an essential part of infrastructure - which in this case happens to be infrastructure provided by government; infrastructure - which includes the people delivering it - as a service.
