starbase80.wtf is one of the many independent Mastodon servers you can use to participate in the fediverse.
Just because we believe in Starfleet's ideals and values doesn't mean we're serious and professional. There's a reason we ended up at Starbase 80.

19/03/2025 - Cold night on the hill. We took the scope with us on our evening walk. The sky was clear but slightly hazy. Tonight's photo is of the flaming star nebula. Whilst waiting (photo took about 2hrs) the aurora popped by to say hello. Quick snap with my camera (bit wobbly as I didn't have my tripod), it didn't last long but it was nice.

Aperture: f/2.8 (for maximum light intake in low-light conditions)
Shutter Speed: 30s (to capture multiple meteors without star trails)
ISO: 1600 (to enhance sensitivity to faint celestial light while managing noise)

Multiple images were required to capture this number of meteors - the resulting image is a composite of these captures.

Almost 4 #StarLink satellites fall back to Earth every day and they rain out aluminum oxide into the stratosphere which destroys the ozone layer. These satellites are more and more problematic with every article I read. Edit: corrected microsatellites to satellites per @sundogplanets 's correction that these are larger satellites than microsatellites.

The Year Lot Longyear Became a Joshua Tree
~~~~~~
Half the Park is After Dark. A magical winter night in Joshua Tree National Park. I love partially cloudy nights. To create this night photo, I lit the subject with a handheld LED flashlight while the camera shutter was open for a long time. So yes, this is a real single-exposure photo. And Lot Longyear is thought to be the bent figure on the cover of "Led Zeppelin IV."
I remember seeing the Horsehead nebula in my parents’ encyclopedia as a kid. I was amazed at how such a thing could exist. And now technologyy has evolved so far, that I can take the same picture from my own backyard! Here it is accompanied by the Flame nebula in the lower left together with the star Allnitak, which is the left most star in Orion’s belt. #horsehead #B33 #NGC2023 #horseheadnebula #flamenebula #astronomy #astrophotography #deepsky #backyardastronomy #astroshots #astrophoto #Space #universe #galaxy #universetoday #nightsky #stars #galaxy #nightphotography #skywatcher #touptek #backyardastrophotography
